My Ears Are Wrong: The Crooked Sounds of Outsider Musicians
These are the sounds trickling up from basements, isolated sheds and street-corners; they are the products of demented minds, regular walks on the moon, social and musical isolation, and sometimes, just an overwhelming love of music combined with a dearth of talent. What may be lacking in traditional musicianship is more than made up for in sincerity and (unshared) vision. Join me for some of the most mind-warpingly strange music out there, exclusively on WTJU, the ONLY radio station in central Virginia.

Jean Shepherd, Master of the Radio Monologue
From the late 1950's through the 60's and 70's beat generation humorist and author Jean Shepherd's late night AM broadcasts from WOR, New York, delighted radio listeners. Shepherd's nightly monologue included stories of his Indiana childhood, army years and commentary on modern society, often punctuated by offbeat tunes performed on his jew's harp and kazoo. School-boys, factory workers and executives alike arrived at school, work or office bleary eyed but content at having heard the latest from "Shepherd" the night before. Drawing from a new archive collected from listener recordings, tune in to hear the Master of the Radio Monologue Jean Shepherd, with host Mark Haskins.

The Good Side to that Bad Word... *cough*EMO*cough*
You know all those popular bands that made it big off of backpacks and love letters never sent (ie, Get up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate, et al.)... however, you may have never heard of all those great, early (and later) "emo" bands that were still just being referenced as a form of "emotional" hardcore. You may also not know that Pennsylvania, of all places, was a hot bed of activity, or you may never have known that the entire "scene" could be played off of 2 degrees of Mike Kirsch and/or Tony Joy. Nate and Bridge will take you through their guilty stacks of records stored under their beds so that when people stop in, no one sees how "in touch" with themselves they really may be. Bands you may or may not hear during this period will be Policy of 3, Closure, Portraits of Past, Rites of Spring, Spirit Assembly, Dagnasty, Moss Icon, Yaphet Kotto, Torches to Rome, Saetia, Assfactor 4, Encyclopedia of American Traitors, et al.

New Zealand: Music and Sounds
Despite its small population and geographic isolation, New Zealand has produced a vibrant, diverse, and globally influential underground music culture. The distinctive "kiwi pop" sound, though commerically underappreciated, influenced American independent rock stalwarts such as Barbara Manning and Pavement, while its improvisational and "noise" scene has been championed by people like Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth. Tune into the lilting pop of the Bats and the Chills, the pastoral ambience of guitarist Roy Montgomery and Dadamah, the nihilistic rock of the Dead C and Gate, the sound collage of Omit and Dean Roberts along with many others. You'll hear heavenly pop hits and "hell-spawned" noise, Flying Nun and Xpressway Records, music and sound from the North and South Island.

Kompakt Records
Stone in pond, dropping. frantic beats layered with smooth micro-blips, running. post robot rocking. In the waning days of the go-go 90s, one German record label stood up and synthesized the waning strands of intelligent dance music, the disciplinary beat of house, and the atmospherics of ambient music. Kompakt records continues to churn out music with a higher hit to miss ratio than any electronic music purveyor. From the tame excitement on show in the pop ambient series to the yearly summation of the worthwile in the Total series, Kompakt has it all; along with a stable of individual performers that should have Rumsfeld decrying "a microhouse gap" between Germany and the US. Join maite-penseur Matt, his grizzled sensei Morgan and their demi-idiot manservant Jordan as they take up the 8 years of Kompakt and spin it like so much cotton candy: light, tasty and utterly anutricious... but that doesn't mean we don't want our money chump! Words are scarce, Trance is inevitable, Umlauts come free.

Rock Snobbery 101/102
Tired of looking at your shoes during cocktail parties when the conversation drifts to krautrock and the advent of the Moog? Spent too many evenings, white knuckled, hoping that no one will ask you about the superior horn section: Stax session players or Tower of Power? Is Captain Beefheart just a lewd phrase? or a special at that French Bistro? Is Skip Spence the guy who changed your oil this morning? Check the fear in the overhead bin, stop the rhetorical questioning, and register for the introductory survey to Rock Snobbery with Professor Poubelle and his TA wunderkid DJ Helvidius. Rock Snobbery 101/102 will be a quasi-comprehensive look at the underbelly of the rock canon and we will take several pit-stops to take longer looks at important, yet snobby, genres. This course is for three credit hours, no writing requirements although auditors will be encouraged to empty their pockets and smoosh their nose upwards...

Meet Thy Doom, Pantywaists!
Doom, sobriquet to many a myriad of nomenclatures - stoner, sludge, and gloom metals, stoner rock, etc. No matter its name, one thing that it is - is Heavy and Crawling. Mildly psychedelic, but bad vibes all around push the riffs at a snails pace, and always at least "a couple" amps for support. Put some headphones on and.. well, you know what to do. We'll start at the beginning (Black Sabbath) and end up somewhere near the present (Neurosis).

Hiring the best studio musicians (none other than the scorching Skatalites), he aided and abetted the creation and perfection of new forms of music, including ska, rocksteady, and reggae. Basslines and rhythms C.S. Dodd produced are still being recycled in modern dancehall. We'll run it with a full selection era to era.

More Than Midnight
From Disorder to New Order: The Joy Division Story
Joy Division's place in the firmament of the British rock scene was secured before lead singer Ian Curtis took his own life on May 18th, 1980. With America and fame beckoning, the course of this pivotal group was suddenly and irrevocably diverted. Out of this tragedy rose New Order, destined to change popular music once again, this time mining hope and wonderfully naive love out of their own self-immolation.
