What may be lacking in traditional musicianship is more than made up for in sincerity and (unshared) vision. Jean Shepherd, Master of the Radio Monologue

From the late 1950's through the 60's and 70's beat generation humorist and author Jean Shepherd's late night AM broadcasts from WOR, New York, delighted radio listeners. Shepherd's nightly monologue included stories of his Indiana childhood, army years and commentary on modern society, often punctuated by offbeat tunes performed on his jew's harp and kazoo. School-boys, factory workers and executives alike arrived at school, work or office bleary eyed but content at having heard the latest from "Shepherd" the night before. Drawing from a new archive collected from listener recordings, tune in to hear the Master of the Radio Monologue Jean Shepherd, with host Mark Haskins.

You know all those popular bands that made it big off of backpacks and love letters never sent (ie, Get up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate, et al.)... however, you may have never heard of all those great, early (and later) "emo" bands that were still just being referenced as a form of "emotional" hardcore. You may also not know that Pennsylvania, of all places, was a hot bed of activity, or you may never have known that the entire "scene" could be played off of 2 degrees of Mike Kirsch and/or Tony Joy. Nate and Bridge will take you through their guilty stacks of records stored under their beds so that when people stop in, no one sees how "in touch" with themselves they really may be. Bands you may or may not hear during this period will be Policy of 3, Closure, Portraits of Past, Rites of Spring, Spirit Assembly, Dagnasty, Moss Icon, Yaphet Kotto, Torches to Rome, Saetia, Assfactor 4, Encyclopedia of American Traitors, et al.

Homestead, All Too Homestead...

Homestead Records was a short lived, but notoriously amazing label that showcased many fine bands that have definitely gone on to be famous in their own rites: Happy Flowers, Sonic Youth, Bastro, My Dad is Dead, Volcano Suns, Dinosaur (Before they were Jr), Naked Raygun, Big Black, Live Skull, Cakekitchen, Daniel Johnston, etcetera etcetera.

Oslo in the Summertime

From the sugary strains of Swedish pop, the sweeping, ethereal melodies of Iceland and the avant-garde stylings of Norway to some Danish garage-punk and a group of Finnish cellists playing death metal, these five countries have provided us with endless entertainment, two hours of which you can hear here.

What kind of jazz do folk DJs listen to? Listen to "Atlantic Weekly Jazz" and find out. Despite its small population and geographic isolation, New Zealand has produced a vibrant, diverse, and globally influential underground music culture. The distinctive "kiwi pop" sound, though commerically underappreciated, influenced American independent rock stalwarts such as Barbara Manning and Pavement, while its improvisational and "noise" scene has been championed by people like Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth. Tune into the lilting pop of the Bats and the Chills, the pastoral ambience of guitarist Roy Montgomery and Dadamah, the nihilistic rock of the Dead C and Gate, the sound collage of Omit and Dean Roberts along with many others. You'll hear heavenly pop hits and "hell-spawned" noise, Flying Nun and Xpressway Records, music and sound from the North and South Island.

JAMAICAN GENIUS III- Coxsone Dodd & Studio One

After getting his start in the dancehalls and yards with his Downbeat the Ruler sound system, Coxsone Dodd (R.I.P.) moved into 13 Brentford Road, where he would create the most prolific of all Jamaican studios, the legendary Studio One. Hiring the best studio musicians (none other than the scorching Skatalites), he aided and abetted the creation and perfection of new forms of music, including ska, rocksteady, and reggae. Basslines and rhythms C.S. Dodd produced are still being recycled in modern dancehall. We'll run it with a full selection era to era.
