the Modlin Center for the Arts and First Fridays host appearances by New Orleans' own Hot 8 Brass Band. The band has epitomized New Orleans street music for over a decade, playing the traditional Second Line parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, infusing their performances with the funk and energy that makes New Orleans music loved around the world. The members of the Hot 8 Brass Band were born and raised in New Orleans and many began playing together in high school. The Hot 8 Brass Band has been part of an important relief project following Hurricane Katrina. SAVE OUR BRASS! is a local grass-roots project that has brought music and instruments to shelters, temporary trailer parks and communities across the Gulf Coast.
Members of the Hot 8 Brass Band have toured in Japan, Italy, France, Spain, Finland, England and Sardinia. The Band performs annually at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, world and jazz festivals across the U.S. and Europe. The Hot 8 has released three critically acclaimed recordings and performs on the latest Blind Boys of Alabama CD (Time-Life Records).
Hot 8 will present a free lunchtime performance (11:45 am-12:45 pm) on the University of Richmond campus and will perform at several outdoor locations during the First Fridays' Art Walk (7-10 pm) on Friday, September 5, 2008. Specific locations will be announced in late August. For updates, please visit modlin.richmond.edu and http://www.firstfridaysrichmond.com.

Though all ticket proceeds will be spent to alleviate suffering in war-torn and drought-ravaged Darfur, local concert-goers will also reap a rich reward as they are transported to musical other-worlds by Ireland’s Lúnasa and Mali’s Vieux Farka Toure.
Folk Roots called Lúnasa an "Irish music dream team". The layered tapestry that underpins their sound is marked by driving, occasionally jazz-inflected rhythms, impeccable individual musicianship and an unswerving faith in the music's ability to navigate new territory with the same confidence as it revisits the old. Connoisseurs of the genre count Lúnasa among the top two or three Irish acts in the world today. Hear for yourself on YouTube.

As a boy, Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure secretly played along to recordings of his legendary father Ali Farka Toure. Ali, who passed away in 2006, feared his son would face the same hardships he had in the music industry. But Toumani Diabaté -- the world’s premiere kora player -- recognized Vieux’s gift and urged Ali to accept his son’s chosen path. Ali agreed, and under Toumani’s guidance, the younger Toure flourished. Rightful heir to the domain, Vieux embodies strains of African tradition that have circled the world, sparked the blues and rock and jazz, and returned home more rooted than ever. See and hear him at at YouTube.

Tonight’s beneficiary, Concern Worldwide, is one of the world’s foremost relief organizations. Praised internationally for its work in Darfur, Concern ties life-saving emergency programming -- provision of food, health supplies, water, and housing -- to innovative, long-term development efforts. One program, for instance, teaches women how to build and use fuel-efficient stoves. Along with reducing respiratory disease, this skill prevents violence towards women who would otherwise leave the safety of camp to collect wood.
Welcome by Mayor Dave Norris.

Yes, that's right, guitar'd and feather'd. Three wonderful women, one memorable evening. Candye Kane, Deborah Coleman, and Dani Wilde are touring together.
In just three years, the Ruf Records BluesCaravan has become an extremely popular musical event reaching more and more blues fans in more parts of the world. After stopping off in Paris, London and Berlin, the 2007 edition played over a dozen concerts in the USA and was a featured attraction at the renowned Notodden Blues Festival in Norway. Setting off under the title "Guitar'd and Feathered," the trio of outstanding artists on the 2008 BluesCaravan tour promises to continue the trend.
"Guitar'd and Feathered" is the name of an exciting new album by California singer Candye Kane. Kane was on board for the initial BluesCaravan in 2005 and rejoins the tour on the heels of her hot new release. Famed for her flamboyant style and powerhouse vocals, the award-winning singer has authored eight albums to date on labels like Antone's, Rounder, Sire and of course, Ruf.
One of the artists holding up the "Guitar'd" end of the bargain is Deborah Coleman. The Virginia native has earned 11 Blues Music Award (W.C. Handy) nominations and has long been a respected performer in the United States. Last year, she finally got a chance to show off her talents to European audiences on the 2007 BluesCaravan tour. Boasting slick chops and an uncanny stage presence, Coleman can lay back on soulful, groove-oriented numbers or tear it up with some incendiary rock. Those who caught last year's performances won't want to miss this return engagement.
The BluesCaravan also has been instrumental in breaking talented young artists to an international audience. Ruf Records' latest discovery is British singer/guitarist Dani Wilde. Inspired by American greats like John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy, Wilde - who's just in her early 20s - has already shared stages with stars like Jools Holland and Gary Moore. While major labels were coveting her for her mainstream appeal, she decided to stay true to her first love, the blues. "In 33 years in the music business, I've never heard a British female singer of such brilliant raw talent," said one industry insider. Listen for yourself!
